Your Mid-Morning Wake-Up Call....

I first saw the Smashing Pumpkins in New Orleans in December of 1991. The bill consisted of headliners The Red Hot Chili Peppers, with Pearl Jam and Smashing Pumpkins as the openers. Now this was before "Alive" broke as a single for Pearl Jam, and "Gish" was just released. None of us had any idea who the opening bands were, so we decided to hang out in the quarter a little longer and get to the show in time to see the Chilis'.

We got to the show after Pearl Jam had already played, and the Pumpkins were nearing the end of their set. I can't remember what song they were playing when we walked in, but the next song was this one; Rhinoceros. I was absolutely entranced. I have never heard anything quite like it, and that was the end of their set. I INSTANTLY regretted arriving late! The rest of the show was excellent - the Chilis' were in fine form, riding high on the monumental success of their breakout album, "Blood, Sugar, Sex, Magic. Of course, about a week later, "Alive" hit the airwaves and we were kicking ourselves all over again.

Luckily, I got to see the Pumpkins two more times, one of those times being the day that Kurt Cobain was found dead - I remember seeing a car at the show with "KURT IS DEAD" soaped on the rear window, and wondering what it meant. It wasn't until we got to our favorite watering hole after the show that we found out what had happened. What a weird day. I got to see Pearl Jam, too. Saw them in an incredible outdoor show with The Ramones that turned out to be the last live stadium show that the Ramones would ever play. Damn, I miss the 90's!
