So, I took the family to our little local cinema to see The Amazing Spider-Man yesterday, and it was, well... AMAZING! When I first heard they were doing a total reboot, I scoffed. I guess after three films (albeit, a lackluster 3rd), I had grown a bit attached to the cast and director, and was really, really looking forward to seeing John Malkovich portray a really creepy version of the Vulture for a fourth film. Sadly, it was not to be.
However, as my wife points out to me on a regular basis; I should be more accepting of change. When I walked out of this film, I had not only accepted the change - I had fully embraced it! Forget Tobey Maguire; Andrew Garfield IS Peter Parker AND Spider-Man! Emma Stone as Gwen Stacy is a superior love interest to Kirsten Dunst's Mary Jane, and Rys Ifans as the Lizard is on par with Alfred Molina's Dr. Octopus (Let's face it, Doc Ock was the best villain of the trilogy). I loved the mechanical web shooters, the backstory with Peter's parents and their connection to Oscorp and Dr. Conners, and especially Denis Leary as Captain George Stacy! Sure, I would loved to have seen J. Jonah Jameson (JK Simmons NAILED HIM in the Raimi films!). I wouldn't have minded seeing an Osborn or two, but overall, I was very satisfied and cannot wait to see what Marc Webb has in store for the next film!
