First Look: Johnny Depp as "Barnabas Collins" in Tim Burton's Upcoming Dark Shadows Film

Jonathan Frid as the original Barnabas Collins

Everyone knows that "Dark Shadows" was originally a soap opera that aired in the early seventies centered around a vampire named Barnabas Collins, played by Jonathan Frid (whom I was suprised to find out is still very much alive and will have a cameo in the film). Even though the series has a large cult following, it's one of those things that I've always been intrigued by, but just never gotten around to watching.
So apparently, Tim Burton is working on a theatrical version of the series with the usual TB suspects; Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter, etc, and this is the first pic of Depp in his vampire duds, looking more like Michael Jackson than the Barnabas we all know and love from the series. However, Entertainment Weekly's Anthony Breznican, who has seen footage of the film, says he looks a lot different onscreen. My guess is that the white makeup, sunglasses and hat are being worn so that the vampire can venture out in the daylight. Yep, that's what I think.

  1. I sure hope so. I know Burton is known for his visuals, but I've always felt he dropped the ball on Helena Bonham Carter's make up in his remake of Planet of the Apes.

He might have done it to help make the attraction between her and Mark Wahlberg's character more believable, but I still think it was too unconvincing. Then again, he's rich and famous...I'm not, so what the hell do I know :)

  2. Yeah, I can see your point regarding "Apes", and even though I don't think it was up to par with his other films, I think I enjoyed it more than most people did. That's why I would never make a good movie critic - I'm just too easily amused ;-)
